GROUP 16

13. Steven Ferguson – Ferguson Group, Oil & Gas Logistics

Estimated Wealth: £298m

Steven Ferguson is the founder and former CEO of the Ferguson Group, a logistics powerhouse that played a crucial role in transporting vital equipment to offshore oil platforms. Starting out in the small village of Kintore in the 1980s, Steven built the business from the ground up—eventually turning it into one of the largest logistics providers in the North Sea oil industry.

The Ferguson Group specialised in the design and rental of transportation containers for oilfield equipment, later expanding into the development of blast-proof accommodation modules used on offshore platforms around the world. Under Steven’s leadership, the company grew beyond the UK, establishing operations in Norway, the UAE, Singapore, and Australia.

After three decades at the helm, Steven sold the business in 2014 for £320 million, marking one of the region’s most successful Oil & Gas exits. From a humble base in Aberdeenshire to a global logistics empire, Ferguson’s journey is a testament to strategic growth and quiet determination.

52. Scotoil Graham Davidson Family

Estimated wealth £23m

Scotoil services was founded in 1982 by keen cyclist Ian Davidson. Ian saw an opportunity to clean and decontaminate returning offshore Oil & Gas materials prior to final disposal, removing radioactive waste and hazards. By the 1990s the company expanded, developing acid baths then moving into the sales, repair, and servicing of radiological instrumentation. Decommissioning saw Scotoil grow significantly. Although Ian sadly passed away at just 46 in February 2003, Graham and the family continued with ownership of the flourishing company until 2014 when Scotoil was acquired by Spanish giant Tradebe for an undisclosed amount.
The Davidson family owned a vast stretch of land at Miller Street near Aberdeen’s beach, and in 1998, it became the site of the £26m Beach Boulevard Retail Centre, home to ASDA and other outlets. More recently in 2021 Graham co-founded Phoenix Decom, expanding on the legacy of his fathers business. Other businesses interests include commercial property in Aberdeen Harbour and City South development in Portlethen through to GT Storage Solutions, Davidson also co-founded The Auto Lounge sports car dealership in Stonehaven catering for the luxury end of the car market. Graham competes in historic motorsport events including the GT Cup and British GT Championships.

51. Mackintosh Plant Hire – Moira, Suzanne, Albert, Gary, and Moira Mackintosh

Estimated Worth £27 Million

Mackintosh Plant Hire was officially incorporated on September 29, 1976, by Albert and Moira Mackintosh. What began as a modest venture with just two new diggers for hire to the building and construction industries quickly evolved into a thriving business. As demand grew, the company expanded its fleet to include a wide range of plant and road-building equipment, eventually moving into its own civil engineering projects.

In the early 1990s, with the Oil & Gas Industry booming in the North East of Scotland, the Mackintosh family seized the opportunity to scale their operations. They developed a vast industrial complex on family-owned land near Echt, Aberdeenshire. This site is now one of the largest privately-owned Oil & Gas storage facilities in the region.

Today, Mackintosh Plant Hire not only rents out heavy machinery but also provides industrial office space, warehousing, and Oil Equipment storage facilities, catering to major players in the energy and construction sectors.

Owned and managed by members of the Mackintosh family, including Moira, Suzanne, Albert, Gary, and Moira Mackintosh, the business is a cornerstone of the local economy. The estimated worth of Mackintosh Plant Hire stands at approximately £27 million.

31. Graeme Bone – Drum Property Group Founder | Prime Four Developer | UK Commercial Real Estate Visionary

Estimated Net Worth £80m

Graeme Bone, is the visionary founder behind Drum Property Group, one of the UK’s most successful privately-owned property development companies. Since founding the firm in 2004, Graeme has built a reputation as a leading figure in commercial real estate, particularly known for high-impact developments like Prime Four Business Park in Aberdeen.

Originally a property solicitor, Graeme’s early career gave him deep insights into the UK real estate market, allowing him to identify and act on emerging investment opportunities before they became widely recognised. His bold strategy involves acquiring strategic land in areas poised for growth—whether due to infrastructure projects, shifts in industrial trends, or changes in consumer behaviour.

This forward-thinking approach has seen Drum Property Group consistently deliver high-value commercial developments across the UK. As of now, the group is overseeing a £3 billion pipeline of major real estate projects scheduled over the next five years.

Graeme Bone's most renowned project remains the Prime Four Business Park in Kingswells, Aberdeen—a £300 million flagship development that redefined the city's business property landscape. At the height of demand, Drum Property Group secured a landmark 30-year lease with Premier Oil at some of the highest commercial rental rates ever recorded in Aberdeen, and notably, without a break clause—an exceptional achievement in UK property leasing.

While Prime Four has seen challenges due to the downturn in the UK Oil & Gas sector, Graeme Bone has successfully diversified the group's portfolio, leading major developments in Edinburgh, London, and throughout the UK. Today, Drum Property Group is widely recognized as a leading commercial property developer, though still considered an underrated success story from Aberdeen.

Determining Graeme Bone’s exact wealth is complex due to the structure of the group and multiple subsidiary companies. However, there is no doubt about his status as one of the UK’s top property entrepreneurs, with a legacy built on strategic foresight, calculated risk, and unwavering execution.

Billionaire industrialist Sir Ian Wood stands as the wealthiest homegrown founder of a company in Scotland.

When he stepped down from the helm in 2013, his creation—Wood Group plc—had grown into a global powerhouse valued at $12 billion, operating in more than 60 countries, employing 60,000 people, and elevating his personal fortune to over £2 billion.

A figure both formidable and fiercely debated, Sir Ian Wood’s life unfolds as an extraordinary saga—one marked by relentless effort, unwavering determination, profound personal sacrifice, moments of tragedy, brushes with disaster, and the darker currents of betrayal, greed, immense wealth, and influence.

Beginning with his family’s modest fishing-boat repair business in 1967, he boldly steered the company into the emerging world of oil and gas just as the industry reached Britain’s shores in the 1970s. From there, he built a sprawling empire that touched shipping, energy, fishing, technology, travel, electronics, power generation, offshore drilling, and property development.

His leadership oversaw the most dramatic industrial transformation Aberdeen had ever seen. Now, for the first time, the story long hidden behind closed doors is revealed. This is an explosive, deeply revealing journey into the sometimes shadowy, often ruthless, yet undeniably electrifying world of the Aberdeen oil and gas sector—its power brokers, its high-stakes decisions, and the man whose influence shaped an era.

Sir Ian’s real-life ascent makes HBO’s Succession seem like little more than a gentle bedtime tale. His achievements stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the greatest entrepreneurs in any industry, at any point in history.
