53. Alistair Langlands – WOODGROUP – Investments & Directorships

Net Worth £29 Million

Alistair Langlands was raised in the northern Scottish town of Forfar. Like many young boys, he initially dreamed of becoming a professional footballer. However, inspired by tales from his two great uncles—who amassed fortunes mining copper in South America during the 1920s—he envisioned launching a business of his own.

After graduating from university, Alistair Langlands joined global accountancy firm Deloitte. His career took a defining turn in 1991 when he became Chief Financial Accountant at WOODGROUP. Langlands joined WOODGROUP at a pivotal time, as the company—under Sir Ian Wood’s leadership—entered an unprecedented phase of expansion driven by the oil boom of the 2000s.

While the foundation was laid by Sir Ian Wood, it was Alistair Langlands who oversaw the most financially successful period in WOODGROUP’s history. In 2011, the company returned £1.08 billion to shareholders and sold its Well Operations division to GE for £1.75 billion.

Since departing WOODGROUP, Langlands has achieved notable success as a CEO-for-hire, building a diverse portfolio of investments and directorships. He served as Chairman of Exova Metals, where he led a £620 million sale to main competitor Element. He also held a directorship at Glacier Energy and played a key role in securing a major investment from private equity firm Averoes.

Alistair Langlands further served as Chairman and Chief Executive of international energy company Three60 Energy, further expanding his influence in the sector.

Estimating Alistair Langlands' net worth is challenging, but it is believed to be around £29 million. He owns a £4 million home in Edinburgh. During his decade-long tenure at WOODGROUP, his salary averaged £440,000 per year. He and Sir Ian Wood also received the largest tranche of share options, with an estimated value of £19 million at the point of sale.

Graham Wood, a graduate of Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, is a prominent figure in the hospitality and property development sectors. He is best known as the owner of The Chester Hotel, widely regarded as the finest luxury hotel in Aberdeenshire.

Beyond hospitality, Graham has a diversified business portfolio. He is a co-founder of Actiph Water, a fast-growing brand in the functional drinks market, and plays a key role in Oak Venture Capital, a private investment firm he operates alongside his brother Garreth Wood and business partner Nic Wood. As of 2024, Oak Venture Capital reported assets valued at £23.4 million, marking it as a significant player in private equity and investment in the UK.

Together with his wife, Gillian Wood, Graham founded the JEllie Foundation, a charitable organisation dedicated to supporting local charities across the North East of Scotland.

Billionaire industrialist Sir Ian Wood stands as the wealthiest homegrown founder of a company in Scotland.

When he stepped down from the helm in 2013, his creation—Wood Group plc—had grown into a global powerhouse valued at $12 billion, operating in more than 60 countries, employing 60,000 people, and elevating his personal fortune to over £2 billion.

A figure both formidable and fiercely debated, Sir Ian Wood’s life unfolds as an extraordinary saga—one marked by relentless effort, unwavering determination, profound personal sacrifice, moments of tragedy, brushes with disaster, and the darker currents of betrayal, greed, immense wealth, and influence.

Beginning with his family’s modest fishing-boat repair business in 1967, he boldly steered the company into the emerging world of oil and gas just as the industry reached Britain’s shores in the 1970s. From there, he built a sprawling empire that touched shipping, energy, fishing, technology, travel, electronics, power generation, offshore drilling, and property development.

His leadership oversaw the most dramatic industrial transformation Aberdeen had ever seen. Now, for the first time, the story long hidden behind closed doors is revealed. This is an explosive, deeply revealing journey into the sometimes shadowy, often ruthless, yet undeniably electrifying world of the Aberdeen oil and gas sector—its power brokers, its high-stakes decisions, and the man whose influence shaped an era.

Sir Ian’s real-life ascent makes HBO’s Succession seem like little more than a gentle bedtime tale. His achievements stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the greatest entrepreneurs in any industry, at any point in history.
